Plate evaporation for botanical extracts

An aqueous botanical extract can be assessed for plate evaporation after its feed composition and residual solids are defined. Different plant materials and extraction methods create different thermal and cleaning requirements.

Define an aqueous concentration duty

State the plant-derived liquid, extraction medium, dissolved constituents and remaining particles. This application page concerns prepared aqueous liquids. A solvent-containing or hazardous process requires a separate equipment and safety assessment.

Upstream extraction and solid separation establish the feed accepted by the evaporator. They are independent process interfaces, rather than equipment automatically included in every plate-evaporation package.

Assess the liquid as concentration rises

Provide viscosity at relevant concentrations and temperatures, foaming tendency and deposit information. An initially clear extract can thicken or form deposits as water is removed, changing heat transfer and separation.

Set the permitted operating condition and the concentrate quality measurements. A product-specific trial can help establish an uncertain operating window; the trial should represent the intended feed and target.

Match materials and cleaning to composition

Product chemistry and cleaning exposure influence the selection of product-contact metal and seals. SUS304 and SUS316L are available family references, but composition and component duty govern the specification.

For a useful enquiry, include the feed and target concentration basis, representative composition, utilities and cleaning conditions. The agreed scope should identify product preparation, evaporator supply and concentrate receiving connections.
